Led by experts.
Artistic Staff
We’re committed to providing professional-quality musical experiences to our members. This starts with exceptional leadership. Our choir is led by long-time director Paula Roberts and accompanied by Talesa Mandin. Throughout the year, we work with professional jazz musicians and performers at our shows and provide musical enrichment like workshops and opportunities to sing on a mic.

Paula Roberts has been at the helm of EKOSingers since its inception in 1979. The first concert was on Father’s Day in 1980–we have really come a long way since then! Paula’s vision has led the choir down a continuous path of musical growth and exploration.
Paula graduated with a BME - Choral Concentration from Indiana University in 1971. Even back then, she dreamed up shows for competitions for her “dorm” choir. She’s been to Woodstock, played in rock bands, and attended Phil Mattson’s vocal jazz workshop. She was a conducting apprentice for a year with Michel Gervais, founder of Edmonton’s Pro Coro, and served on the board of the Alberta Choral Federation. Paula also has a passion for dance; she’s studied both salsa and ballet and challenges EKOSingers to not only sing but also MOVE, though not necessarily at the same time!
At Grant MacEwan College, Paula taught private voice lessons and summer vocal camps and conducted a junior jazz choir for three seasons. Past conducting engagements include the Northgate Lions Seniors’ Choi and Edmonton Musical Theatre’s children’s program. In addition to her work with EKOSingers, Paula is the director of Edmonton Vocal Minority and Riverbend United Church.
Along with Paula comes Jamie Kidd, her husband and long-time supporter of EKOSingers. Jamie, our sound man “extraordinaire,” helps us sound fabulous at concerts and records our year-end shows and CDs. Occasionally, Paula’s two sons, Adam and Nathan, help out at concerts as well. So it’s become a family affair, not only for the Roberts-Kidd’s but for all EKOSingers members, past and present, who form strong bonds as they work their way through the creative process together. This is what keeps Paula and the rest of us coming back for more!

Talesa got an early start in music, gigging with her musical parents. Her first official accompanist job was in grade 9, playing for a boy’s choir, and she fell in love with it! Her career as an accompanist has taken her as far afield as Japan and all the way back to her many accompanist gigs here in Edmonton and the area.
Talesa is a graduate of both Victoria School of Performing and Visual Arts and MacEwan University and has completed her Royal Conservatory of Music in Piano Performance, Grade 10. She is the musical director of an Anglican church here in Edmonton, and is no stranger to either accompanying, directing, or singing - sometimes all at the same time! Currently, you can catch her with a band on Spotify, look for Mallory Chipman and the Mystics, where Talesa plays keyboard and backup vocals.
